What we can do for you
Advisors at the University Advising Center are here to help you:
  • Be knowledgeable about degree and major requirements
  • Understand your academic responsibility
  • Select classes
  • Navigate university policies and procedures
  • Explore and choose majors, minors, and professional degrees
  • Identify university resources that fit your needs
  • Assist you with questions you may have
We are a great resource to turn to when you have a question and don’t know who to ask. If we don’t know the answer, we will get you to someone who does.
When to see us

Your college experience is a time of exploration and responsibility. We help you to take ownership of your education. To be successful while you are at KU, you should meet with your advisor regularly.

You will need to meet with your advisor each semester before enrolling for classes. You should make an appointment for March or April. Schedule your appointment well in advance of when you need to enroll, as our office becomes very busy during enrollment.

Please call (785) 864-0176 in early March to make your advising appointment for enrollment this semester.

Meet with an advisor any time!
Advisors are available to assist you in person as a “walk-in”, by phone, by email, and by appointment.

**Read this entire guide before you schedule your appointment**
Who you need to see

Before you call to make an appointment, it is best to determine who you will need to see.

All UAC advisors can assist students in exploring any major or minor at KU.

It is best that you see an advisor on the advising team that corresponds to your major. If you are still deciding on a major, you should see an advisor on the Undecided advising team or an advisor on the team of the major(s) in which you are interested.

***You only need to see one advisor listed on the advising team***
Things to think about before you schedule your Appointment
Dates/times that work with your schedule
  • Look at your planner before you call to determine dates/times that you can and cannot meet. Have it out for reference when you call
Be flexible
  • Your preferences and needs are always considered when you schedule an appointment. Please remember, however, the need for flexibility
Which advisor?
  • If you don’t know, remember to choose one from the appropriate advising team
Your major(s) or potential major(s)
  • If you don’t have any idea, see one of the advisors on the Undecided advising team
Things you want to discuss with your advisor
  • Most appointments are made for 30 minutes
  • Request a 60-minute appointment if:
    • You want to complete a Graduation Plan
    • You need to complete an Academic Probation contract
    • You need to discuss a Financial Aid Appeal
    • You think you will need more than 30 minutes
    • You have more than 3 topics to discuss
Things to think about before you meet with your Advisor
For every appointment:
  • Your academic goals
  • Your career goals
  • Major and minor options
  • How your classes are going (if you are currently enrolled)
  • Questions and/or concerns you have about your particular situation
For enrollment appointments (in addition to the things listed above):
  • Classes you want to take
  • Classes required to complete your degree, major(s), and/or minor(s)
What to bring to Your Appointment
For all appointments:
  • Your advisor’s name
  • A current ARTS form: www.artsform.ku.edu
  • A list of things you want to discuss
For enrollment appointments (in addition to the items listed above):
  • An updated enrollment worksheet: www.advising.ku.edu
  • Your past advising and enrollment information
    • Keep all such information in a folder so you can find it easily
  • If you have never seen us before, complete the Advising Tutorial
Getting the most out of Your Appointment
First, you need to arrive on time and know your advisor’s name. It’s always great to arrive early. If you arrive 10 or more minutes late, you will be asked to reschedule. Go to 126 Strong Hall to check-in. Things to Do to Ensure a Successful Appointment:
  • Be sure to be honest with your advisor and yourself
  • Be prepared to discuss the information you have gathered that is relevant to your goals for the meeting
  • Be ready to discuss your situation, plans, and goals with an open mind
  • Remember that your advisor is here to help you and is always looking out for your best interests
  • Ask questions! This is your chance to find out everything you ever wanted to know about your situation at KU
  • Make sure you leave with copies of notes taken and materials given to you during your appointment
    • Have a folder in which you can keep all of your advising materials, as you will need to refer to them throughout your time at KU…and maybe even beyond!
Now what?, or What to do after your Appointment
  • Read all materials given to you and follow-up with your advisor if you have questions and/or concerns
  • Follow your advisor’s instructions and complete any tasks given to you

The policies of professional schools vary regarding Credit/No Credit. Please consult your advisor before electing Credit/No Credit.

**Before dropping a course reduces your enrollment to below 12 credit hours, you need to make appropriate arrangements with various departments depending on your circumstances. Dropping below 12 credit hours can affect financial aid, housing, health/auto insurance, fraternity/sorority membership, and other aspects of your academic and personal situations. Be sure to contact your advisor if you are considering dropping below 12 credit hours.

I want to get into a class that is currently full. What should I do?
You should try to speak with the instructor because only the professor can give permission to add the course. You may also consult Enroll & Pay to determine if any students have dropped the course, and add the class based on the Add/Drop schedule in the timetable.
I forgot how to access my KU email. What should I do?
Visiting KU's Online Service at Academic Computing Services will allow you to retrieve information regarding your KU email account.
