Laurence Draper

Greetings! I am a professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences which is a part of the Division of Biological Sciences at KU. I am also one of several faculty advisors in the University Advising Center (UAC) where I spend half my university time. I joined the UAC when it was established back in 1996. My areas of teaching and research have been in microbiology and, particularly, immunology. Currently I have been teaching BIOL 200 (Basic Microbiology), a course that is taken by students interested in careers in the allied health sciences, especially nursing. I have taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in immunology since I began at KU in 1968. During that time I have also been involved with the Human Biology degree program and have served on its governing committee for about 25 years. Finally, I also am involved in the University Honors Program and have led sections of the Freshman Honors Tutorial. Throughout all this I have advised and mentored both undergraduate and graduate students in the various biological disciplines and degree programs offered at KU.

I received my BA in biology and chemistry from Middlebury College (VT) and earned my Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Chicago. Before joining the faculty at KU, I was a staff scientist for some eight years at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD, where I studied the effects of ionizing radiation on the immune system. In addition to my academic work I have been heavily involved in various aspects of university governance for many years.

I thoroughly enjoy working with students in the UAC. I am quite convinced that academic advising is an essential, indeed crucial, component of providing a valuable education here at KU.
