Sheryl Adelman Kimmel

Hi! My name is Sheryl Adelman Kimmel. I am an academic advisor in the University Advising Center (UAC) at the University of Kansas.

As of this July, I will have lived in Lawrence for l4 years. I came to Lawrence initially as a graduate student in American Studies. I am originally from Winnetka, Illinois and a graduate of New Trier High School. I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree at Boston University where I majored in American Studies, concentrated in Sociology and minored in Judaic Studies. When I completed my master's degree in December of 1995, I decided to continue on for a doctorate in American Studies. I was formally awarded my PhD in May 2007.

My philosophy toward advising students is based on my belief that a successful academic career is dependent and strengthened by a well-rounded lifestyle. Therefore, I encourage students to supplement their classroom experiences and knowledge with available activities and experiences from the larger KU and Lawrence communities. My own academic development progressed along such lines, and I found it fulfilling on personal and intellectual levels. So, for example, throughout the course of my academic career at KU, I was active in student organizations and governance. While I had opportunities to teach in the classroom as a GTA and instructor, I was also active in university administration and the community. I worked at the KU Hillel Foundation, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Graduate and Professional Association while teaching and attending classes in American Studies, Religious Studies, History and Sociology. As a doctoral student in American Studies I emphasized my coursework, writing, and research on the American Jewish experience. Therefore, while my master's thesis was entitled, "The Deadheads: An American Subculture," my dissertation focused on post-World War Two American Jewish leadership and change through one man's experiences (it is entitled, "The Changing of the Guard: A Case Study of Maynard I. Wishner an American Jewish leader."). My liaison areas at the UAC are Theatre & Film, History, American Studies, and the Jewish Studies minor. While that means I am responsible for updating my colleagues on changes in those areas and for advising students on the requirements, I also advise students interested in all majors and degree programs at KU. So, don't hesitate to contact me!
