My name is Kathy Mason and I joined the staff of the UAC as an advisor in September 2004. I have been
either a student or staff member of KU for about 30 years, so I think it's fair to say that I am a loyal
Jayhawk! I enjoy this position because it is a great way for me to use my past experience working for the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences both in the Undergraduate and Graduate Divisions, and also my
experience as an instructor of various courses including Western Civilization I and II.
As an academic advisor, I consider myself an informed guide to KU's complex and complicated academic
universe. As such, I try to show students how to get the information they need to make the best decisions,
suggest possible alternatives and options, and sometimes just listen. I believe in the Socratic approach to
learning, so I will often ask as many questions of my advisees as they ask of me. That way we both learn
something from the experience, and many times, students answer their own questions. My goal is for every
student to leave my office in some way better off than when he or she came in. Some of my special
responsibilities within the UAC include working with Mt. Oread Scholars, helping students decide on an
academic major, assisting students who are interested in Political Science or International Studies majors,
however I am familiar with most all of the undergraduate programs at KU.
