Principal Courses
If you are not admitted directly to a professional school, you should focus on completing their general education and admission requirements in your first two years. Many of these classes are “principle courses” which have been specifically selected as entry level classes designed to introduce students to a field of study. These include classes in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and non-western cultures.

See the link below for a list of the principle courses offered for the spring semester. Most 100 and 200 level courses are appropriate for first-semester freshmen, although some may have prerequisites.

Many professional schools may refer to principle courses in other ways, using terms such as “distribution” or “general studies courses.” Others may have specific classes in the humanities and social sciences which they require you to take. The links below will take you to the main web sites of the professional schools. There you can find undergraduate program information that outlines general education requirements.

Helpful Hint - If you are undecided or have several interests, you should attempt to enroll in classes that count for multiple degree programs. Be sure to share with your advisor all of the interests that you have.

If you have questions for your advisor, please make a list so that you remember them at orientation. Please make sure you do not leave orientation with any questions unanswered. It is imperative that we ensure you are properly enrolled before you leave campus as it may be difficult to make changes later.
