Requirements for Pre-Nursing Students

A total of 62 semester hours of credit (see specific courses listed below) with a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required in order to apply to KU's School of Nursing.

Click on the courses listed below and you find descriptions from the university catalog (you will need to page down to find the individual course descriptions once you click on a certain course). Additionally, special notes about some of the courses are also outlined below.

ENGL 101 - Composition.
3 credits
ENGL 102 - Composition and Literature.
3 credits OR
ENGL 105 - Honors English (fulfills both 101 and 102).
3 credits
Humanities (one principal course: HT, HL, or HR).

  • Students are recommended to take a biology class in their first semester at KU.
  • Students who are considering nurse anesthesia or other health-related majors (physical therapy or pre-med, for example) are recommended to take BIOL 150 - Principles of Molecular and Cellular Biology which is worth 4 credits.
CHEM 125 - College Chemistry OR CHEM 184 - Foundations of Chemistry.
5 credits
  • CHEM 184 is recommended for students who are considering nurse anesthesia or other health-related majors such as PT or pre-med.
  • CHEM 125 is offered only during the spring semester and sometimes during summer session.
  • Students are STRONGLY recommended to take CHEM 125 prior to microbiology unless they've had solid chemistry coursework in high school.
BIOL 200 (3 credits) and 203 (2 credit lab) - Basic Microbiology.
5 credits
  • For the lab, students will need to have an updated tetanus booster if they have not had one in the past 10 years. Watkins Health Center on campus can give vaccinations.
BIOL 246 - Physiology.
3 credits
BIOL 240 and 241 or 242 - Anatomy.
5-9 credits
  • The anatomy lab BIOL 241 is an obervation lab and is worth 2 credits, while BIOL 242 is a dissection lab and is worth 3 credits.
HSES 330 - Nutrition OR ANTH 542 - Biology of Human Nutrition. (no course description available)
3-4 credits
* You must have the pre-nursing interest code on your ARTS form in order to enroll in this course.
MATH 101 - College Algebra OR higher.

MATH 365 - Statistics OR PSYC 300 - Statistics in Psychological Research.
