Hello!, or as they say in Texas, where I spent the last five years working as a residence director, Hey! My name is Rebecca Cates and I am an academic advisor in the University Advising Center. Welcome to KU and the UAC!
Although I am new to The University of Kansas, I grew up in Olathe and have always been a fan of the Jayhawks. I am a first-generation college student who earned a bachelor's degree in French at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a master's degree in Communication at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. I am an avid proponent of a liberal arts education and have studied such diverse subjects as German and genetics and accounting and anthropology. I know what it is like to be a student who is not sure of what to pursue as a major. In fact, I have known what it is like to be a post-grad who is not sure of what pursue as a career! So I am excited to be able to assist you in pursuing your academic and career goals. Working with college students is my vocational passion. And helping you discover your own interests and passions and connect with academic and real-world opportunities is something I look forward to.
While you are at KU, I encourage you to take a variety of classes, live in on-campus housing, get involved in student organizations, study abroad, and enjoy student life at the university. If you have questions about KU or just want to talk about general college life, I would love to chat. Feel free to make an appointment to see me by calling the UAC at 785 864-0176 or by e-mailing me at rjcates@ku.edu. I am excited about meeting with you!
