Hi! I am Sheryl Adelman Kimmel, senior academic advisor in the University Advising Center (UAC).
I came to KU after completing my B.A. degree from Boston University in 1993 and, basically, never
left! I completed both my M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in the American Studies program here at KU.
Originally, I am from Winnetka, Illinois and a graduate of New Trier High School.
I have served as a full-time academic advisor in the UAC since 2003. My philosophy toward advising
students is based on my belief that a successful academic career is dependent and strengthened by
a well-rounded lifestyle. Therefore, I encourage students to supplement their classroom experiences
and knowledge with available activities and experiences from the larger KU and Lawrence communities.
My own academic development progressed along such lines, and I found it fulfilling on personal and
intellectual levels. So, for example, throughout the course of my academic career at KU, I was
active in student organizations and governance. While I had opportunities to teach in the classroom
as a GTA and instructor, I was also active in University administration and the community.
I worked at the KU Hillel Foundation, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Graduate and
Professional Association while teaching and attending classes in American Studies, Religious
Studies, History and Sociology. While I advise students pursuing all different degrees and programs
at the University, I specialize in the humanities and oversee student retention efforts in our
office. I also serve as the liaison to Disability Resources and the Office of Student Financial
Aid. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you!
